Wrexham Registration Service Ceremony Update - Customer

On the 24th March 2020, Wrexham Registration Service took the decision to suspend conducting of any Marriage, Civil Partnership or other discretionary ceremonies (e.g. Renewal of Vows; Baby Naming etc.) at any licensed venue in Wrexham until further notice. This suspension was initially to the 30th June 2020, however as social distancing is very much part of our lives we have since reviewed this date and have now decided to carry the suspension forward to the 31st July 2020.  Please be assured that we are continuously reviewing our services but we do have to adhere to government guidelines.

We understand this is upsetting news for you, but in this very difficult time for everyone, and given the further direction by the Welsh Parliament, we want to ensure that everyone stays as safe as possible as we all do our part to fight this virus.

I can assure you that the decision has not been taken lightly.  It has been made in recognition that the Registration Service has to remain operational right throughout these very uncertain times. Our staff are included in the list of Key Workers and, to keep the Service operational, we are considering all options to protect customers, staff and our communities as a whole as far as possible from ANY cross contamination. We have a small team who have to conduct registrations of Births and Deaths and we need to be able to prioritise these elements of the Service. We will advise you of any developments as often as we can and will review the situation if things change quickly, in line with the Public Health Wales review.

All provisional booking fees that you have paid will be honoured and are transferable. If you have not already done so, please contact your venue to arrange a new date for your ceremony and then contact the Register Office to confirm our availability. Please note that, for Marriages and Civil Partnerships, your Notice of Marriage or Civil Partnership is valid for 12 months from the day you gave notice. If your Notice expires, before the revised date of your Ceremony, then you will have to give Notice again in the District where you reside (this will cost £35 each, based on current regulations).

  • Certificate requests will now be minimised to the following only
    • Required for employment purposes – posted no collection
    • Required for benefit purposes – posted no collection
  • Payments – we would prefer card only payments to minimise handling of cash.
  • Registering births and claiming Child Benefit / Universal Credit - You can now make a claim for Child Benefit or Universal Credit before you register your child’s birth. Under normal circumstances, the birth must be registered before you make a claim, but the rules have been changed due to the current situation. All appointments at the Guildhall for birth-registrations and marriage / civil partnership notices have already been suspended until further notice.

Ceremony Update

25 June 2020

Now that the restrictions on conducting wedding and civil partnership ceremonies have been relaxed, we will be looking at arrangements for facilitating ceremonies for those couples who wish to proceed. However, we do not currently have arrangements in place to safely manage the giving of notices or conducting ceremonies at our premises which remain closed. Notably, the Council’s register office does not enable social distancing measures to be applied. We are, therefore, reviewing all processes and our own facilities in order to determine how best we can accommodate the wishes of couples who wish to proceed.

Wedding or civil partnership ceremonies are not able to take place in approved premises, such as hotels or heritage sites, at this time, as these are currently closed.

Please be advised, that from Monday 2nd December 2019 certificates ordered from the Wrexham Registration Service, for births, deaths and marriages, will be available for collection after 10 working days (2 weeks). Any certificates that are to be posted will be posted on the tenth working day. Priority service is unaffected. Please also be advised that ALL certificates posted are done so by pre-paid SECOND class post. Any certificates lost in transit should be reported to the Wrexham Registration Service, however replacement certificates are charged at £11.00, no waiver is provided.

Registering a Birth

Please note that you are welcome to make an appointment to register the birth of your child in Welsh or English. You will be asked your preference when you contact us to register the birth.

Attention Parents

If your baby was born on or after 29th October 2002, please ensure that you take your hospital discharge notes with you to the Register office when visiting to register your baby's birth. These discharge notes contain the baby's NHS number and enable the Registrar to issue a form for you to register the baby with your family doctor.

Should you forget to take the notes with you, don't worry, as your family doctor will be able to obtain the NHS number from a different source.

Birth, Death, Marriage and Civil Partnership certificates cost £11.00 each

Payment will be accepted by cash or debit/ credit card. 

Certificates ordered at our reception desk, or by telephone, can be collected, or posted to the address on the application form, within 10 working days.

Should you require your certificate sooner, we have a Priority Service available for £35.00 including certificate.
