Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and Canal World Heritage Site

Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and Canal has joined the ranks of the world’s elite heritage sites.

At the 33rd meeting of the World Heritage Committee in Seville in June 2009, the aqueduct was inscribed onto UNESCO’s World Heritage List.

The decision marks the culmination of six years’ of campaigning and hard work led by Wrexham Council, with key partners British Waterways and the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historic Monuments of Wales.

The nomination has also been supported by Denbighshire County Council, the former Oswestry Borough Council, Shropshire County Council, Cadw, English Heritage, Countryside Council for Wales, Visit Wales, Tourism Partnership North Wales, UNESCO Cymru Wales and the Institution of Civil Engineers. Every community council along the 11-mile site has also given its support to the bid.
